It’s easy to suggest that it’s Fripp’s vision, his drive, that has kept Crimson at the forefront of pioneering yet idiosyncratic music. Since then Fripp has remained the sole constant. The pair abandoned that trio’s whimsical pop in the pursuit of more headstrong – or head-fuck – music, and brought in multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, bassist/vocalist Greg Lake and lyricist Pete Sinfield. Their mid-70s drummer Bill Bruford once called Crimson “a terrifying place”, and that’s perhaps the best description of the band started by guitarist Robert Fripp and drummer Michael Giles, when their previous band Giles, Giles And Fripp ceased to be of interest to them. This most exhaustive and exhausting of prog rock bands have had nearly two dozen full-time members across five decades.

Their contribution to rock was cemented when they were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Combined with their powerful songwriting and the band’s devotion to individuality, it was a potent combination that ripped up the rule book of what it meant to be 'rock', and we were all the better for it. Roxy’s stylised glamour was catnip to the new romantics, their sense of provocation a beacon to the punks. Fearless and with a taste for overt experimentation, Roxy were radical and exciting, pushing boundaries without any concern for commercial compromise. A band of "inspired amateurs" (again, Manzanera's words), they were essentially a band of punks five years ahead of schedule. The group where a young Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno cut their teeth, they dominated Britain’s glam-era pop scene in the first half of the 70s, despite having next to nothing in common with Slade, Sweet et al and not being a pop group – or even a rock group.

Listen to Eddie Vedder “I Am Mine” for free with a 30-day free trial to Audible here.Still, they didn’t do badly. They came, and we had them, I could tell, they’re good, we gotta give it some time.’”Įventually, the power did come back on, and even though it was close to midnight, Strummer returned to the stage and proceeded to play a two-hour set. It’s been a half-hour now.’ And Joe didn’t want to leave, he’s like, ‘I don’t know, it’s people man. Vedder returned with the supplies and says, “I’m just holding the flashlight over Joe while he rolls a spliff, and then he gets the ghettoblaster going, Jack’s got his bananas and the other guys are kind of going bananas, going, ‘Joe, I think we need to fucking bail on this shit. It was at this point that Strummer gave an order to the young Vedder: He needed rolling papers, eight D batteries for a boom box, and some bananas for his friend, which obviously meant Irons. As the problem got sorted, Vedder found himself in an enviable position: The man holding the flashlight to light the way as Strummer and Co. Ostensibly as retaliation, two songs into Strummer’s headlining set, the openers managed to shut off the power to the entire venue. I was very grateful for that moment.”Īs for the actual show, Vedder says the opening act not only had a rough set but acknowledged they were probably stiffed on payment that night. Irons couldn’t remember, so the two went out to Vedder’s car, where Vedder had the tape: “And within 30 seconds he said, ‘Oh no, that’s Cliff,’” Vedder remembers, adding with a laugh, “And how generous of him to get into a young guy, a stranger’s car, and answer a question. Vedder dutifully fetched some bananas for the drummer, and then took the chance to ask if a live Chili Peppers bootleg he had featured Irons or Cliff Martinez on drums. Vedder says he introduced himself to Irons as he came off the stage, and he remembers Irons asking if there were any bananas. Vedder said he showed up to the venue early during soundcheck, noting, “I really appreciate soundchecks, sometimes more than a show because that’s kind of where the real work happens, or the real communication between band members, they’re doing it without the eyes of a crowd.” The only person who’d showed up to soundcheck, though, was Irons, a founding member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who was also playing with Strummer at the time.
